If you’ve been known to make the same boring salad for a while now you are not alone. That said, it’s probably time to raise your salad game!
Salads can taste very bland and boring at times, but that is not because salads suck. It is because we are making them wrong.
We all know that a nice big salad is good for our health, or at least we are told so, but a lot of us don’t enjoy the flavour and texture of a bowl of greens. Nevertheless, salads are important!
Experimenting with the flavours and textures of your salads is all it takes to learn how to make greens taste delicious that you actually look forward to eating them on a regular basis.
Here are 7 ways you can make your next salad better:
#1 Add some healthy Fats!
I mean have you had Guacamole? Simply adding a cup of kale to your regular guacamole makes it a salad, not a conventional one, but it is still a salad! It has all the nutrients you would get from a regular salad and it tastes amazing. Moreover, you can add nuts to your salad, this is an ultimate for me as I love crunchy foods and so having nuts on my salad fixes the texture and adds so many flavours to it.
#2 Don’t use Iceberg lettuce
Please don’t use Iceberg lettuce unless you want your salad to taste like water, there are over twenty types of green leaves that taste good so let us use them. I love adding arugula, spinach and kale those three add a taste to your salad. A tip regarding green leaves – chop them finely as you don’t want to struggle, eating them.
#3 Add fruits!
pump up your greens with fruit! Adding sliced pineapples, strawberries or figs is a great start. Don’t be afraid to try frozen fruit or options that sound a little weird with greens, like bananas. All fruit tastes great with greens and tends to pair well with most dressings.
#4 Get creative with your ingredients
Make your salad a rainbow add different colours to it. Different colours mean different flavours. Go crazy with the ingredients you add to your salad. Add grains, protein and different vegetables (even potatoes – some people forget it is a vegetable). I like to add crispy rice noodles and taco chips to my salad as well, just like nuts they crispen up the salad and add more flavours.
# 5 Add Flavorful homemade dressings
An important point people miss out on is that anything in your fridge or cabinet can be made into a dressing. I can have a dressing made out of peanut butter, lemon, dijon mustard, jalapenos, avocados, etc. Be as creative as you can’t in the dressings but remember for a bowl of salad you don’t need more than a tablespoon of dressing. One tablespoon of dressing can cover your entire salad and add the flavours you need don’t go overboard. A tip, I tell people, when it comes to making a salad don’t add the dressing until right before you serve it as the ingredients become mushy and the salad loses the good texture that we all look for.
You can also add herbs as they add new definition to your salad
# 6 Grill it
Let’s be honest here everything grilled tastes good no exceptions. Grilled salads are a guaranteed way to keep your taste buds happy with all those leafy greens. Because when you grill a Romanian lettuce, for instance, it gets caramelized and absorbs a little bit of that bbq flavour we all look for.
#7 Salad Spinner
Salads shouldn’t be soggy and there are two ways to ensure that one is mentioned above ( don’t add the dressing until you are ready to serve/eat the salad) two invest in a salad spinner. Old ways of drying green leaves aren’t as effective as a salad spinner.
